Miguel Berchelt: record, next fight and profile →
PR Best Boxing Promotions (PRBBP) was not involved and challenges this afternoon's purse bid held by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) for a fight between the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight champion, Roman "Rocky" Martinez against the first ranked Miguel "El Alacran" Berchelt.
Earlier today in New York City, the purse bid took place for Roman Martinez's mandatory defense of the WBO super featherweight title against Miguel Berchelt. Zanfer Promotions, who promote Berchelt, won the promotional rights with a bid of $251,000. Coming in second was All Star Boxing with $201,500. Puerto Rico Best Boxing, who handle Martinez, did not submit a bid.
For the second time in less than a month, Roman Martinez and Orlando Salido were believed to have a deal in place, only for such plans to be interrupted by a looming mandatory title defense.
The official world championship challenger to the WBO super featherweight, Miguel "Scorpion" Berchelt, is ready to begin training camp for his next fight. At the moment there is no opponent, but there is a purse bid in the coming days for a mandatory fight between Berchelt and current WBO champion Roman 'Rocky" Martinez of Puerto Rico. There are ongoing discussions to make a trilogy fight between Martinez and Orlando Salido for early March, but time is running out and the WBO is applying pressure on everyone involved.
A pair of World Boxing Organization (WBO) title fights due to head to a purse bid hearing have been met with a four-day delay – perhaps just long enough for a previous matchup to come into play.
Roman Martinez and Orlando Salido had a working date and a willing network. However, a deadlock on nailing down a location has threatened plans for what would be a third fight between the pair of super featherweights. Talks have been ongoing between camps for the latest entry into their thrilling rivalry, with American cable giant Showtime having expressed interest in showcasing the fight. Apparently a deadline was in place as Puerto Rico’s Martinez - who currently hold the World Boxing Organization (WBO) super featherweight title - has been ordered to make a mandatory defense versus Mexico's Miguel Berchelt.
In the televised opener, 21-year old middleweight Juan Montiel (19-2, 19 KO) showed off his clear power again in upending undefeated Ivan Montero (19-1, 8 KO) in three rounds. The referee was Miguel Canul. A right hand dropped Montero hard early in the third and Montero struggled to signal he was okay to go on when he got up. Eventually he acknowledged the referee enough to get a chance but a Montiel salvo ended matters along the ropes at :47 seconds of round three.
Mexico's Miguel 'Scorpion' Berchelt risks his undefeated record on Saturday night against Panamanian contender Rolando 'Tractor' Giono in Merida, Yucatan. Berchelt (27-1, 24 KO's) risks a title shot oppurtunity. The WBO has made Berchelt the mandatory challenger to world champion Roman Martinez, who has a trilogy match coming up with Orlando Salido. Now has has to get past Giono (17-6, 11 KOs) in their ten round super featherweight bout from the Coliseum Yucatan.
Mexican super featherweight contender Miguel Berchelt (27-1, 24KOs) has landed a world title opportunity in the near future. The World Boxing Organization has approved a trilogy fight between WBO super featherweight champion Roman "Rocky" Martinez (29-2-3, 17KOs) and former beltholder Orlando Salido (43-13-3, 29KOs).
In the televised Lightweight opener, 23-year old Miguel Berchelt (27-1, 24 KO), 133, of Merida, Yucatán, Mexico, scored knockdowns in rounds three and five to easily stop 20-year old Josue Bendana (9-6-4, 5 KO), 132 ½, of Managua, Nicaragua, in five rounds. It was the first stoppage loss in the career of Bendana. Berchelt extends his win streak to six, all by stoppage, since his lone career loss to Luis Flores in March 2014.
