The official world championship challenger to the WBO super featherweight, Miguel "Scorpion" Berchelt, is ready to begin training camp for his next fight.
At the moment there is no opponent, but there is a purse bid in the coming days for a mandatory fight between Berchelt and current WBO champion Roman 'Rocky" Martinez of Puerto Rico. There are ongoing discussions to make a trilogy fight between Martinez and Orlando Salido for early March, but time is running out and the WBO is applying pressure on everyone involved.
On Sunday, the Mexican slugger will travel to Hermosillo to begin his preparation for his next fight. Until the situation with Martinez is resolved, he has no date and no opponent.
"I'll be happy, glad I stayed with my family for a few days and ready to see what I expect to be a good year for me," said the boxer who has a record of 28 wins, 25 of them by knockout, with one defeat.
Berchelt has been working on his own while in Cancun, mainly running to maintain his condition and prevent any significant weight gain.
"I only know that I have to work and be ready to fight, to retain my position as the world's number one mandatory challenger and if I should lose, they would send me back down the ladder and I can not afford it," Berchelt said.
