Larry Merchant has been vocal in his opinion of Floyd Mayweather’s next and possible future opponent as the veteran analyst prepares for another run-in with the five-weight world champion on Saturday night.
WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KOs) is planning to achieve two dreams in 2012. The first is to defeat former three division world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The second goal is to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) in September.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer first planted the seed more than two years ago for the possibility of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez one day getting a crack at pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. At the time, the move was viewed as means to simply build the name of a young fighter still on the way up. What sounded preposterous at the time is now dangerously close to becoming a reality.
The eventual showdown is quite an obvious possibility, but neither Saul Alvarez nor promoter Oscar De La Hoya wanted to talk much about it on a conference call Thursday. Nevertheless, if Alvarez can overcome former three-division champion Shane Mosley on May 5 in Las Vegas, and undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. beats Miguel Cotto later that night at MGM Grand, Alvarez-Mayweather would be an intriguing fight for later this year or in the first half of 2013.
The manager of WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KOs), Jose 'Chepo' Reynoso, believes his boxer has a lot to lose in a possible fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Reynoso and Canelo met with the executives from Golden Boy Promotions to discuss a possible fight against Mayweather. The two sides did not reach a final agreement, says Reynoso.
WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is waiting for a decision to be made on a possible fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman believes that WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will give Floyd Mayweather Jr “a helluva fight” should negotiations for a May 5 clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, materialize.
He's been the chief adviser to 23 world champions, going back to an era when boxing had fewer world champs than pro rassling does. He's been closely associated with promotional archrivals Top Rank and Golden Boy. And he launched the meteoric ring career of unbeaten Mexican wunderkind Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Top Rank promoter says that while he “cant figure out the (Floyd) Mayweather Jr situation” he knows that Mayweather is meeting a group of investors on a future fight against pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.
As BoxingScene.com had reported a few days ago, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KOs) began training for a planned ring return on May 5th. Also returning on May 5th, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, is Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs). Canelo has not disclosed if he's fighting Mayweather, or if the two boxers are going to co-headine another HBO pay-per-view - as they did last September.
