Liam Smith: record, next fight and profile →
Things have gotten a little more interesting because Juergen Braehmer is planning a legal challenge in the hope of facing Callum Smith in the super middleweight final of the World Boxing Super Sseries (WBSS) final. "I'm assuming I'm going to box and I've already got my lawyer on the case," Braehmer told German newspaper the Maerkische Oder Zeitung.
Liam Smith looks set to travel for his next fight after his promoter revealed that terms have been agreed. The former WBO super-welterweight world champion will challenge for his former title against current champion Sadam Ali. Smith, 29, became the mandatory challenger to the Miguel Cotto conqueror back in November when he won an eliminator against Liam Williams in a rematch at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.
Former junior middleweight world champion Liam Smith is shaking his head over the controversial situation involving Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. It was revealed on Monday that Canelo tested positive for traces of clenbuterol, ahead of his scheduled rematch with Gennady Golovkin on May 5th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
According to Frank Warren, promoter for Liam Smith, a deal is getting very close for a mandatory fight against WBO junior middleweight world champion Sadam Ali. Warren is currently negotiating with Ali's promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, and the two sides are close to deal. He believes the fight will be finalized by next week.
Following Liam Smith’s November victory in the rematch against Liam Williams he became first in line to challenge for his old WBO super welterweight title. Sadam Ali tore up the script to win the belt last weekend against Miguel Cotto to set-up a meeting with ‘Beefy’ early next year. Speaking on the BoxNation Podcast, Smith gave his thoughts on the New Yorker: “It was a very good performance, he got his tactics spot on. I think it was just that he was young, fresh, fit and with good legs.
With Miguel Cotto’s world title fight against Sadam Ali coming up this Saturday, many in the boxing world are sorry to see Cotto putting on his gloves for one last time - and promoter Frank Warren is among them. When asked by Steve Lillis during our BoxNation podcast, Frank stated that he hopes the Puerto Rican four weight world champion isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
Last Saturday night, Liam Smith repeated his win over Liam Williams, in a more measured fight than their first meeting, out-boxing Williams at times. Speaking to iFL TV immediately after the fight in Newcastle, Smith reflected: “I thought I put in a very good performance, not one person from the outside expected the way I boxed today. I think not many people thought I could [box].”
Liam Smith booked himself another world title shot with a points win over Liam Williams. The former WBO super-welterweight world champion made sure to repeat the result of their first fight, a controversial stoppage back in April at Manchester Arena, this time on neutral territory.
Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle -Former junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (26-1, 14 KOs) won a twelve round majority decision over Liam Williams (16-2-1, 11 KOs) in a WBO world title eliminator. The scores were 114-114, 116-112 and 117-111.
THE ONLY PREDICTION I can make with any real certainty about our show at the Metro Arena in Newcastle this coming Saturday is that I reckon it will be edge of the seat stuff pretty much from start to finish. None more so than our headliner, which is the return tear-up between Liam Smith and Liam Williams, with the prize for the winner being a direct shot at the WBO world super welterweight title.
