Liam Smith: record, next fight and profile →
An illness has forced Liam Smith to postpone his WBO Super-Welterweight World Title challenge against Sadam Ali, scheduled for May 12th at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.
Former British and Commonwealth light-middleweight champion Liam Williams is aiming to fight for world honours within a year after signing up with MTK Global. Welshman Williams (17-2-1-KO12) was edged out by new stable-mate Liam Smith in two enthralling clashes last year but having already bounced back with a stoppage win, the 25-year-old is determined to challenge for the biggest prizes.
In Las Vegas this Saturday, blazing young US gun Jarrett Hurd and wily Cuban wizard Erislandy Lara duel to unify the IBF, IBO and WBA Super-Welter belts. BoxNation, of course, shall be delivering the action live to your screens.
After the recent news that Canelo Alvarez tested positive for banned drug clenbuterol, trainer Joe Gallagher has argued why boxing needs to introduce stricter testing. Gallagher was speaking about Liam Smith's World Title challenge against Sadam Ali on May 12th, where 'Beefy' can win back the belt he lost to Canelo in September 2016.
The most magnificent night of Sadam Ali’s boxing life took place right where any New York kid would’ve dreamed it would happen. The Brooklyn native upset Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden, the famed arena where Ali always wanted to fight from the time he took up boxing at 8 years old. The Garden has been Cotto’s home away from home throughout the Puerto Rican icon’s career, which made Ali feel like the visitor, despite that they fought in his hometown December 2.
Liam Smith believes beating Sadam Ali will put him "back at the top of the tree", ahead of Amir Khan and Kell Brook. On May 12th, Smith travels to Verona, New York, to face the WBO World Super-Welterweight Champion, who makes the first defence of the belt he won against Miguel Cotto in December.
Liam Smith has extra motivation to regain the world title against Sadam Ali with the knowledge a host of Americans are queueing up for unification clashes and domestic rivals Kell Brook and Amir Khan have joined the division. Smith (26-1-1-KO14) takes on Ali (26-1-KO14) in Verona, New York on May 12 in an attempt to recapture the WBO world light-middleweight crown he lost to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in September 2016.
Liam Smith has the chance to reclaim his old World Title on May 12th, and admits he'll have to be at his best to beat Sadam Ali. Last November, 'Beefy' outpointed Liam Williams to put an end to the first fight controversy and he subsequently became mandatory challenger for the WBO World Super-Welterweight Title.
Sadam "World Kid" Ali (26-1, 14 KOs) will defend his WBO Junior Middleweight World Championship against hard-hitting former world champion and No.1 contender Liam “Beefy” Smith (26-1-1, 14 KOs) in a 12-round main event at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The event will take place Saturday, May 12 and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10.00 p.m. ET/PT and BT Sport and BoxNation in the UK.
Liam Smith doesn’t believe Canelo Alvarez’s explanation for how clenbuterol turned up in his system. The former WBO super welterweight champion cannot see other skeptics accepting the Mexican superstar’s story, either. No matter how many times Alvarez tests negative for performance-enhancing drugs moving forward, Smith assumes most boxing fans won’t forgive Alvarez for testing positive twice last month for a banned substance.
