Liam Smith (26-1-1, 14 KOs) looks set to travel for his next fight after his promoter revealed that terms have been agreed.

The former WBO super-welterweight world champion will challenge for his former title against current champion Sadam Ali (26-1, 14 KOs).

Smith, 29, became the mandatory challenger to the Miguel Cotto conqueror back in November when he won an eliminator against Liam Williams in a rematch at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

And Smith’s promoter Frank Warren, of Queensberry Promotions, has confirmed that the fight between Ali and Smith is not far away.

“We’ve agreed terms with Golden Boy and the fight is going to go on sometime in May,” Warren told the official BoxNation podcast.

“It looks like it’s going to be New York, we’re just waiting for them to confirm the date, but it’s all done and hopefully [Liam] can reclaim his title.

“It’s a fight I think he can win, he’s had good grounding and never turns down anybody and if he comes through that we can get him some good defences in the UK.”

Smith told Boxing Scene, in the wake of Warren’s comments, that he has agreed to those terms and “that’s all, up to now.”

It is understood Golden Boy are looking to host the fight on May 12 at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, with BoxNation expected to pick up the UK TV rights to the fight and HBO set to screen it in the States.

The contest will have a lot of eyeballs in the United States, as it will paired on HBO with the pay-per-view replay of the rematch with Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, which takes place one week earlier from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Smith's only career defeat was to Canelo.
