Liam Smith: record, next fight and profile →
Since his world title win over Sadam Ali in May there has been somewhat of a Mungíamania surrounding the young Tijuana native. The power punching World Boxing Organization [WBO] champion spoke to BoxingScene.com last week and said he relishes the change of lifestyle.
Just last month, rising Mexican talent Jaime Munguia (29-0, 25 KOs) dethroned former World Boxing Organization [WBO] champion Sadam Ali with a vicious fourth round stoppage. The 21-year-old had been touted as a possible opponent for Gennady Golovkin when his rematch with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fell through.
WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (29-0, 25 KOs) is looking forward to a mandatory showdown with former champion Liam Smith (26-1-1, 14 KOs) of the UK. Munguia captured the title earlier this month, with a four round thrashing of Sadam Ali in Verona, New York. The young Mexican puncher sent Ali down four times before the contest was waved off.
Contrary to speculation no date has been agreed for WBO super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia to defend his title against former holder Liam Smith in July. Boxing Scene spoke to Smith's promoter Frank Warren today (May 21) to address the rumours that his man would travel to America to face the new champion on July 21 or 28.
A few weeks ago, it was Liam Smith (26-1-1, 14 KOs) who was scheduled to face WBO junior middleweight titlist Sadam Ali on May 12th at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in New York. However, Smith suffered an illness and withdrew from the fight. And in his place stepped in young Mexican banger, Jaime Munguia, who proceeded to bludgeon Ali over four rounds this past weekend to capture the title.
BOXNATION DELIVERED TO UK fans an undoubted contender for Fight of the Year in the early hours of Sunday morning. We witnessed something very special between Vasyl Lomachenko and Jorge Linares, where Lomachenko prevailed in round ten courtesy of a crippling body shot. I am now convinced Lomachenko is the best fighter I have seen since Sugar Ray Leonard.
As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, newly crowned WBO super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia of Mexico, and his promoter Fernando Beltran, are waiting for the opportunity to make a defense in July at the Gasmart stadium in Tijuana.
The memories of when Erik "Terrible" Morales came back from the United States with his first world champion belts came inescapable. The promoter is the same, Fernando Beltrán, president of Zanfer Promotions. In 1997, Erik conquered the green belt at super bantamweight after knocking out the legendary Daniel Zaragoza in 11 emotional rounds in September 1997 in El Paso, Texas.
Liam Smith could fight for the world title in September. The mandatory challenger to the WBO super-welterweight crown was set to come up against Sadam Ali on May 12. Smith, a former holder of the title, was forced out of his clash against the 2008 Olympian recently after suffering an allergic reaction to a virus treatment.
THE LONG-TERM just got longer as far as our, so far hugely successful, partnership with BT Sport is concerned and I was delighted to make public the extension of our agreement to stage boxing on behalf of such a major and progressive broadcaster.
