Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Wilfredo Vazquez on Oct. 1, Puerto Rico

By Rey Colon

Former world champions Juan Manuel Lopez (34-5, 31 KO's) and Wilfredo 'Papito' Vázquez (24-6-1 and 19 KO's) will meet on October 1 at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente, sources have indicated to The Sport Press.

The Lopez himself posted a picture on Instagram and Facebook, which showed a face to face between the two boxers.

The bout will take place at 129 pounds, after several years of public verbal battles on the social networks where both fighters took vicious swipes at each other and things got personal on more than one occasion.

Both are strong punchers but their careers are more or less gone, and not they are not even close to where they were at when their rivalry began.

Lopez, a former super bantamweight king and WBO featherweight world champion, has not fought since September 2014 when he lost by knockout against Argentina's Jesus Marcelo Andres Cuellar in a battle for the interim WBA featherweight title.

Two months earlier he had lost again, also by knockout, this time to current WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas. Juanma is has a 4-5 balance in his last nine fights.

Vazquez, meanwhile, former WBA world champion at 122-pounds, made his last fight in December 2015 and lost a split decision to Rafael Rivera, his second loss in a row. Like Lopez, he's 4-5 in his last nine fights.

I will happily pay to see this!!! These are 2 high action fighters who genuinley dislike each other very strongly. I'm definitely pulling for Papito.. I met him in person and he was a very nice and very patient kid…

Agree with most of the posts here about this being a great fight several years ago. Now, it makes me cringe to think of Lopez taking more punishment - even from a shopworn Vazquez. JuanMa doesn't sound too good in…

Fight is happening because Juanma is promoting some natural supplement company wouldn't be surprised if Vazquez is also part of that same company. Juan has been training since early this year but he still has looked big in the pictures…
