By Thomas Gerbasi - June 24th usually would have been the first day on the mind of Josesito Lopez, considering that’s his mother’s birthday. But this time around, the only thing the Riverside, California boxer thinks about is June 23rd. As far as he’s concerned, that’s the day the world stops, and he’s going to go out swinging against Victor Ortiz at STAPLES Center to celebrate. “It’s exciting,” Lopez told BoxingScene. “But I don’t know if it’s my maturity or what, but I don’t want to let the excitement get the best of me. I’m so focused on the fight that I absolutely have no plans, not even one hour after the fight. My focus is just on the fight. My mom’s birthday is the following day and I have no idea what the heck I’m gonna do for her birthday. (Laughs) The only thing I’m thinking about is Victor Ortiz that night.” And for good reason. Despite being a talented 27-year old with the skills and grit to become a star and a champion in his chosen profession, his career thus far has been marked by a series of starts and stops, bad decisions going against him, and a consistent theme of being the B side in fights against higher profile opponents.

LOS ANGELES – Former World Champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO's) of Ventura, Calif., former NABF Champion Josesito Lopez (29-4, 17 KO's) of Riverside, Calif., former Three-Time World Champion Humberto “Zorrita” Soto and hard-hitting, top rated contender Lucas Matthysse took part in a final media workout on Wednesday at Fortune Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, just days before they do battle on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, June 23 live on SHOWTIME® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

Last Tuesday during a media conference call, Golden Boy Promotions announced that on September 15th on Showtime pay-per-view, they will pit Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and “Vicious” Victor Ortiz in a mega fight they have called “Knockout Kings”.

Victor Ortiz has tried his best to downplay any controversy with Josesito Lopez. The former WBC welterweight champion repeatedly reassured anyone that thinks he isn’t focused on fighting Lopez June 23 in Los Angeles that he’s not looking ahead to a Sept. 15 pay-per-view showdown with undefeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Lopez (29-4, 17 KOs, 1 NC) and his handlers are insulted because Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Ortiz and Alvarez, officially announced their fight last Tuesday, a week-and-a-half before Oritz will oppose Lopez.

When Golden Boy announced that Victor Ortiz would be Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s opponent for September 15th, Ortiz’s current opponent Josesito Lopez felt disrespected. With Ortiz still having to face him on June 23rd at the Staples Center, it was like Golden Boy saw a Lopez loss as a foregone conclusion.

Josesito Lopez’s promoters are as offended as Lopez by Golden Boy Promotions scheduling Victor Ortiz’s fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez before Lopez and Ortiz box June 23 in Los Angeles.

It’s been a rough nine months for Victor Ortiz, mainly because it’s how long he’s been forced to sit on last September’s knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather. The former welterweight titlist returns to the ring on June 23, when he faces late replacement Josesito Lopez at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
