Staples Center, Los Angeles - Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18KOs) shocked the odds by moving up in weight and stopping Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22KOs) in nine rounds of action. After nine rounds of war, Ortiz suffered a broken jaw and could not continue. Photos by German Villasenor.

By Jake Donovan - In a year filled with controversy and disappointment, Josesito Lopez did his part to free the sport of bad news and conflicts all in one shot. For the second time in as many tries, Victor Ortiz failed to find a way to win inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The latest setback came in huge upset fashion, as Ortiz informed referee Jack Reiss at the end of nine rounds that he was unable to continue due to a broken jaw. Flushed down the drain are plans for Ortiz to face Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on September 15, a goal Lopez had from the moment the fight was prematurely announced less than two weeks ago. Lopez felt disrespected by the announcement, as if he were being overlooked in Saturday’s fight. The career gatekeeper had a chance to do something about it and handled his business in a big way. “I told everyone I was going to shock the world,” Lopez stated in the aftermath of the biggest win of an otherwise hard luck career. “Today is my day!” Lopez knew going in that he would have to offer the fight of his life in order to secure victory. The final scorecards confirmed pre-fight suspicions that a knockout was the only way to go in a bout that provided non-stop entertainment for the 7,865 enthusiastic fans in attendance.

Josesito Lopez the busier fighter, former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz hits harder and has faced the much tougher competition. Ortiz's jab is a rumor. Lopez needs to land his jab and make this a competitive fight.

Later tonight, former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz was scheduled to do battle with his rival Andre Berto in a rematch to their thrilling April 2011 battle. Ortiz won that fight after twelve furious rounds, surviving two knockdowns in the process, and there was much interest in the rematch.

by Cliff Rold - Sometimes, the misfortune of others isn’t so bad. Boxing fans everywhere were disappointed with the initial postponement of Victor Ortiz-Andre Berto II. They were more than that when the rescheduled rematch was lost to a failed steroid test. Fans were out a highly anticipated fight. Ortiz, the former WBC Welterweight titlist, was out two training camps if a suitable replacement wasn’t found. Enter Josesito Lopez. Only the hardest of hardcore fans know his name, but what they know they have to like. Lopez is a gritty guy who finds himself with the chance of a lifetime. Ortiz challenging Saul Alvarez for a Jr. Middleweight title in the fall hangs in the balance. It’s the main event of a quality doubleheader that also features a crossroads bout between a fighter who could well be undefeated and another who has lingered on the verge of bigger things for years, never quite getting there. The leather will fly. Let’s go to the report cards.
