Zepeda, Rodriguez To Co-Headline on UniMas, May 30

A pair of Top Rank prospects are scheduled to headline the May 30th edition of 'Solo Boxeo' on UniMas. Undefeated welterweight Jose Zepeda (22-0, 19 KO's) is being lined up as the night's main event. The 25-year old southpaw is reportedly in camp with Floyd Mayweather and serving as a sparring partner as Mayweather prepares for his May 2nd bout versus Manny Pacquiao. Also on this card is lightweight Saul Rodriguez, who comes in with a mark of 16-0, 13 KO's. Rodriguez began his 2015 with a second-round stoppage of Carlos Rodriguez in January but his last two bouts were post-poned for various reasons.

In the opening bout of the Top Rank/ Bash Boxing card, welterweight Arnold Barbosa Jr. stopped Taif Harris in the first round of a scheduled four round bout. Barbosa (5-0, 1 KO) went straight at Harris, throwing multiple combinations onto a retreating Harris. An accumulation of punches dropped Harris (1-3) to the canvas, prompting referee Kirk Hoskins to step in and stop the bout at 1:45.

Unbeaten junior welterweight Jose Zepeda will fight on January 17 at the Oceanview Pavilion in Port Hueneme, California, Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman recently told Boxingscene.com. Zepeda will headline a Top Rank/ Bash Boxing card that will be broadcast on UniMas. No opponent has been announced yet to face Zepeda (21-0, 18 KOs).

Junior welterweight Jose Zepeda and welterweight Alex Saucedo will fight in separate eight rounds bouts on January 17, Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman told BoxingScene.com on Saturday night. Both bouts will be part of a Top Rank card that will take place in the Los Angeles-area. UniMas will air the "Solo Boxeo Tecate" broadcast.

The televised opener was over almost as quickly as it began. 25-year old southpaw Welterweight Jose Zepeda (21-0, 18 KO), 143, of La Puente, California, went through 29-year old veteran Victor Cayo (32-6, 23 KO), 143 ¼, of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to score the eighth first-round knockout of his career. Zepeda set up the finish with a jarring right lead, finishing a shaken Cayo with a left to the chin that dropped Cayo near the ropes. Cayo wobbled up at nine but referee Hector Molina wisely waved the matter closed at 1:27 of the first. Cayo suffers his third knockout loss in four starts. All of his career losses have come inside the distance.

Cruiserweight Alex Zubov won a six round unanimous decision over Harvey Jolley. Zubov (5-0, 4 KOs) used his aggression to get on the inside of Jolly's guard. Zubov landed the more telling blows, but Jolly (15-20-1, 7 KOs) used his ring savvy to tie up and tried countering. As the bout progressed, the action slowed down, but Zubov still controlled the action. All three judges scored the bout 60-54 in favor of Zubov.

Robert Alcazar, trainer of Jose Zepeda (19-0, 16KOs), says it would be "crazy" to accept a fight with former champion Brandon Rios on just three days notice. Zepeda's name has emerged as a frontrunner to replace Diego Chaves - if Chaves is unable to obtain a visa to face Rios this Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Chaves was given until Wednesday to get his visa or Top Rank is planning to go forward with another option.
