Alan Sanchez Returns To Win Column With A Vengeance

Travell Manzion continues to be a knockout every time out. The Ann Wolfe-trained super lightweight flattened Antonio Sanchez in the 1st round of the Fox Sports 1-televised opener Friday evening in San Antonio, Texas. A left hook was enough to do the trick for the 18-year old knockout artist, who is based in Austin and has fought exclusively in Texas to this point in his career. Sanchez (2-2-1, 2KO) was out upon impact, convulsing on the canvas as the bout was immedately waived off. The official time was 2:23 of round one.

Welterweight prospect Alan Sanchez learned a valuable lesson from Luis Collazo in his last outing in September, a wide decision loss on Fox Sports 1. “Maybe I shouldn’t have taken that fight,” Sanchez told BoxingScene.com on Thursday. “He had a lot of experience, and it showed. But I found out that I need to have a harder training camp to get better. I need to be more focused.”

Tabasco, Mexico - Roberto "Massa" Ortiz (29-0, 23KOs) outclassed and then blitzed brave Jorge Romero (24-6, 21KOs) to convincingly retain his WBC Silver super lightweight title in ten. Massa was winning after four, and then after eight, on the official cards. He was boxing better but Romero stayed with him using his youth and bigger size to effect. But in the tenth Massa unleashed a wind mill of punches. A big right put Romero in trouble, and another catapulted him into the ropes for a count. Wobbling but game Romero was not going to escape. A third flurry put him down, somehow he got up. But Referee Lupe Garcia saved him at 1:36.

The weights are in for Saturday's event in Villahermosa Tabasco, Mexico. In the main event, undefeated Roberto "Massa" Ortiz (28-0-1, 22 KO's) of Torreon, Coahuila, will face Jorge "Koki" Romero (24-5-0, 21 KO's), of Culiacan Sinaloa, in a twelve round battle for the World Boxing Council (WBC) silver junior welterweight title. The card will be televised by Televisa in Mexico and Fox Sports Networks in the U.S. and Canada. Cancun Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions are staging the card. Ortiz was 139.3-pounds and Romero came in at 139.7.

At today's final press conference in Tabasco, Mexico - Jorge "Pantera" Silva reiterated his intention to confront Roberto "Massa" Ortiz, who will share the stage this Saturday in Villahermosa, Tabasco. Ortiz will defend his Silver junior welterweight world title of the World Boxing Council (WBC) against Jorge "Koky" Romero. Silva, who originally scheduled to fight former world champion Luis Collazo, is facing a last minute replacement. Silva has fought as high as 154, as he did last year in an exciting fight with Alfredo Angulo - but he feels that his best weight would likely be at 140-pounds.

Next Saturday in Tabasco, Mexiuco - welterweight contender Jorge "Pantera" Silva will face Francisco “Volcán” Cordero of Colombia. Cordero replaces the injured Luis Collazo, who withdrew last week. At 21 years old, Silva has a professional record of 20 wins, 16 of these by knockout, in exchange for three defeats and two draws. Cordero has an impressive record of 28-2 with 20 wins by knockout, but in his last fight he was stopped in two rounds by junior middleweight Michael Oliveira. Cordero is fighting well above his comfortable weight, as in late 2010 he was fighting at super featherweight.

BoxingScene.com spoke with trainer Virgil Hunter, who denied the allegations being made by welterweight contender Jorge Silva, who claimed in a widespread press release that Hunter, and his fighter, junior middleweight Alfredo Angulo, were making statements that he used performance enhancing drugs in last December's fight - which Angulo won with a ten round unanimous decision.

Mexican welterweight Jorge Silva has lashed out at Alfredo Angulo and his trainer Virgil Hunter. According to Silva, both Angulo and his trainer made statements that suggested performance enhancing drugs were being used by Silva on December 15th in Los Angeles. Silva took Angulo's best shots and fought the larger man in a toe to toe war, but came up shot with a ten round decision loss. Silva (20-3-2, 16KOs) says he is ready for fight Angulo in a rematch, but this time he plans to have enough time to properly prepare - where the first time around Silva says he accepted the fight on late notice and dropped a rapid ten pounds to make the junior middleweight limit.

Former welterweight champion Luis Collazo (33-5-0, 17 KO's) of San Juan has suffered an injury and won't be able to move forward with a planned fight against Tijuana's Jorge "Pantera" Silva (20-3-2, 16 KO's) on June 15th at the Convention Center Villahermosa in Tabasco, Mexico. It was scheduled for the International welterweight crown of the World Boxing Council (WBC). The card is headlined by junior welterweight Roberto "Massa" Ortiz taking on Jorge Romero.
