Jessie Vargas: record, next fight and profile →
NEW YORK – Everyone expected Adrien Broner to talk trash to Jessie Vargas during their press conference Thursday. The emotional former four-division champion saved his harshest words for someone other than his opponent, though. Broner unleashed an unprovoked, vicious verbal attack on Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe.
SHOWTIME Sports will provide live streams of official fight week events in advance of this Saturday’s SHOWTIME tripleheader that is headlined by a battle between former four-division champion Adrien Broner (33-3, 24 KOs) and former two-division Jessie Vargas (28-2, 10 KOs).
Last week former two-division champion Jessie Vargas (28-2) held a media day at the Mayweather Boxing Club in advance of his April 21st showdown against Adrien Broner (33-3). The fight takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and will headline a Showtime tripleheader.

Potential security threats to boxers set to fight Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn have caused organizers of the card to alter the schedule of events leading up to it. A TMZ.com report Tuesday suggested that a social media beef between Adrien Broner and rapper Tekashi69 were at the root of the schedule changes.
On Saturday night Jessie Vargas (28-2) will face Adrien Broner (33-3) in a Showtime televised main event. The triple header takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY and will also feature Gervonta "Tank" Davis against Jesus Cuellar for the vacant WBA super featherweight title and Jermall Charlo versus Hugo Centeno for the interim WBC middleweight title.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Jessie Vargas has been at this for a while. He's gotten paid to punch people for just short of 10 full years, has held world title belts in a pair of weight classes and was a member of Mexico’s 2008 Olympic team – though his amateur trip to the Summer Games in Beijing was canceled by a loss in a regional...
Last week Jessie Vargas (28-2) was very confident at his media day in Las Vegas. BoxingScene.com was on hand as the former two-division champion put the finishing touches on his training camp for his April 21st showdown against Adrien Broner (33-3).
Kevin Cunningham was as skeptical as anyone. The veteran trainer had heard many times from Adrien Broner that the inconsistent Cincinnati native was ready to rededicate himself to preparing properly for his fights. That’s why when Broner called Cunningham about training him following his decision defeat to Mikey Garcia, Cunningham told Broner he’d have to do everything Cunningham asked or their partnership wouldn’t work.
Jessie Vargas has knocked out only 33 percent of his professional opponents and Adrien Broner has never been knocked out. Once their fight begins Saturday night, though, Vargas figures Broner will be surprised by what he and his trainer, Mike McCallum, consider underestimated power. “If he comes to fight me on the inside, then that’s going to feed right into my game plan,” Vargas said after an open workout in Las Vegas recently. “Bring it on. If he wants to come and fight, then we’ll pick him apart bit by bit. We’re ready for any type of fight. Once he feels my power, he’s going to back up and choose a better route.”
