For the second time in as many days, Tuesday’s edition of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN has lost a fight due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The latest fallout comes on fight day, as a planned rematch between super middleweights Raphael Igbokwe and Genc ‘The Sexy Albanian’ Pllana will no longer take place. has learned that Houston’s Igbokwe (14-2, 6KOs) tested positive for COVID-19, the result coming to light less than 24 hours after both boxers made weight for their undercard appearance which was to have taken place prior to the start of the ESPN telecast.

Headlining the show, unbeaten former featherweight titlist Oscar Valdez (27-0, 21KOs) faces Puerto Rico’s Jayson Velez (29-6-1, 21KOs) in a 10-round junior lightweight contest. Their bout and the remaining four fights on the card will proceed as planned, airing live on ESPN beginning at 8:00pm ET/5:00pm PT from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

News of Igbokwe’s positive test comes one day after the show lost a heavyweight clash between Guido Vianello (7-0, 7KOs)—who competed for Italy in the 2016 Rio Olympics—and Phoenix-based Kingsley Ibeh. The fight would have represented a third Bubble appearance for Ibeh, who scored wins on June 25 and July 2 from the closed-doors venue, but was denied the hat trick after also falling ill to the infectious disease.

The latest occurrence puts the count at 22 fights lost globally due strictly to COVID-19 since boxing resumed on June 9 after the sport was forced to shut down in mid-March due to the ongoing health crisis.

Further chalking up this matter to bad luck, the rematch between Pllana (8-1-1, 4KOs) and Igbokwe was previously budgeted for a July 16 show before being relocated to Tuesday’s card.

The first fight between the pair of 168-pound prospects took place last August, with Igbokwe earning an eight-round majority decision in his Houston hometown. Pllana is unbeaten in his four subsequent starts since then, the lone blemish coming in an eight-round draw with unbeaten Kalvin Henderson last December.
