Don’t expect Devin Haney to swap punches with Gervonta Davis any time soon - unless Davis intends to fight at 135-pounds, according to Haney’s father and trainer.

Bill Haney believes that mouthwatering matchup has no practical chance of being made if the Baltimore-based dynamo cannot come down to the 135-pound class, where Haney holds one of the four major titles. Davis went up to the 140-pound division in his last fight against Mario Barrios, winning by 11th-round knockout.

Davis is scheduled to head back lightweight on December 5, when he faces undefeated Rolando Romero on Showtime Pay-Per-View.

On paper, Haney (26-0, 15 KOs), the WBC lightweight beltholder, has plenty of other top-notch opposition to worry about. In and around the lightweight class includes unified champion Teofimo Lopez, as well as mandatories Ryan Garcia and Joseph Diaz, the latter two are going to face each other this fall. But the Las Vegas-based 22-year-old has complained lately of his struggle to find viable opponents willing to face him.

The elder Haney had nothing but high praise for Davis (25-0, 24 KOs), however. He seems confident that his son will lock horns in the ring with Davis at some point down the line.

“‘Tank has always been the most dangerous fighter out of those future possible opponents with Devin,” Bill Haney continued to tell Fighthype.com. “Make no mistake about it. I didn’t need to see him against Mario Barrios for me to know that.

“I just know that stylistically Devin presents some problems to Tank just like Tank presents a great deal of dangerous power to Devin as well.”
