Rigondeaux Still Mulling Offers, Eyes December Return

•Oct 6, 2014

Guillermo Rigondeaux is free from Top Rank, but he has yet to find a replacement co-promoter, according to the junior featherweight world champion’s manager. “He had substantial offers from Roc Nation and Frank Warren, and they were two of the biggest contracts I’ve ever seen for a 122-pounder, but his co-promoters haven’t been able to agree,” Gary Hyde told BoxingScene.com. Hyde is referring to Miami-based Caribe Promotions, who he is imploring to help him facilitate his Cuban charge’s return to the ring after the contract with Top Rank ended in July.

Guillermo Rigondeaux won’t be fighting Chris Avalos next, and so Rigondeaux’s manager is aiming at another name in the 122-pound division, Scott Quigg. “On hearing that Matchroom [is] taking Rigondeaux challenger Chris Avalos down a different route, we have decided to force Rigondeaux-Quigg,” tweeted Gary Hyde on Saturday.

Despite the difficulty in finding an opponent for his star man, Guillermo Rigondeaux, manager Gary Hyde is feeling positive ahead of one of his other fighters’ chances next week against Curtis Stevens. Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam has been training in California for this IBF eliminator, and Hyde spoke to BoxingScene from their training camp via telephone on Wednesday. “Hassan’s got to be switched on all the time, he can’t start trading to please the crowd, that’s what he did against [Peter] Quillin and it ended up bad for him,” said the Irishman.

It was a surprise Thursday when Chris Avalos pulled out of his Nov. 22 title fight with Guillermo Rigondeaux. But maybe it shouldn't have been. After all, the Cuban boxer has had a helluva time getting people into the ring with him. He's called for more unification bouts, but has been unable to secure a dance partner. Rigondeaux's next bout is his first since the expiration of his contract with Top Rank, and Top Rank is the co-promoter of Avalos, thickening the plot. Avalos is also the manadatory for Carl Frampton; Top Rank and Eddie Hearn (who now co-promotes Avalos) are aggressively pursuing that fight.

WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (28-0-1, 16KOs) is possibly the only top-tier boxer in his division who is actually trying to secure a fight with WBO/WBA champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (14-0, 9KOs). The Cuban two-time Olympic gold medal winner believes Santa Cruz is scared to fight him. Following his destruction of overmatched Manuel Roman on Saturday in Las Vegas, Santa Cruz once again called for a fight with Rigondeaux.

Frampton's Manager: No Rigondeaux, He Brings No Money

There is little chance of a unification between newly crowned IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (19-0, 13KOs) and two-time Olympic gold medal winner Guillermo Rigondeaux (14-0, 9KOs), who holds the WBA/WBO titles. Frampton capture his title on Saturday in Belfast, with a twelve round decision over Kiko Martinez. He would prefer a unification with the WBA's 'regular' champion Scott Quigg or WBC titleholder Leo Santa Cruz.
