WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (28-0-1, 16KOs) is possibly the only top-tier boxer in his division who is actually trying to secure a fight with WBO/WBA champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (14-0, 9KOs). The Cuban two-time Olympic gold medal winner believes Santa Cruz is scared to fight him.
Following his destruction of overmatched Manuel Roman on Saturday in Las Vegas, Santa Cruz once again called for a fight with Rigondeaux.
"I want to fight Rigondeaux. I'm not afraid of him. I'll fight anyone. The next fight I want is Rigondeaux, Frampton or Quigg. I'm ready for those fights. I'm going to talk to my manager [Al Haymon] to make it happen," Santa Cruz.
When BoxingScene.com asked Golden Boy Promotions VP Eric Gomez if the Rigondeaux fight was possible - Gomez stated that it was.
"We've never had a problem making fights for Leo. Anybody that we present to him, [his team has] never said no. I think its a matter of getting together with [Showtime Sports Head] Stephen Espinoza and All Haymon and seeing what's the best move for him. Obviously he wants to fight the best in his division. He deserves it. Its just a matter of getting down to business and seeing numbers, it's all in negotiations," Gomez said.
