Abel Sanchez, trainer for IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs), does not expect a fall showdown with WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs).

Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC title. He became the mandatory in 2014 after knockout WBC interim-champion Marco Antonio Rubio.

The World Boxing Council issued an order which allows both boxers to take interim bouts before facing each other in the fall.

Golovkin will defend his belts against mandatory challenger Dominic Wade on April 23rd at The Forum in Los Angeles, California. Canelo will make a voluntary defense of his title against Amir Khan on May 7th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The fight between Canelo and Khan takes place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds, which seems to be the Mexican superstar's preferred weight. His last four bouts took place at 155 and he already stated that a fight with Golovkin is not able to happen unless GGG comes down to catch-weight. Because Golovkin is the mandatory challenger, he has no obligation to fight him at anything less than the middleweight limit of 160.

If Canelo refuses to face Golovkin in the fall, then he will be stripped and GGG will become the full champion under the WBC.

Sanchez believes Canelo is staying at 155 to give himself the option of dropping to 155 if the WBC applies pressure to make the fall mandatory.

"I don't think Canelo wants to fight Triple G and we won't see Canelo [fight him] until probably 2018. [Canelo's promoter] Oscar [De La Hoya] has got to be smart. If Golovkin wasn't there [at 160-pounds], Canelo would be at middleweight," Sanchez said.
