This coming Friday night in Florida, Gennadiy Golovkin will defend the IBF, IBO middleweight belts against mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta of Poland.

The biggest fight for Golovkin is a trilogy bout with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Canelo will be fighting on the following night, in Texas, in a clash with WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith.

 

Should Canelo and Golovkin win, they could potentially collide in 2021.

Back in 2017, Canelo and Golovkin fought to a controversial twelve round split draw.

A year later, in their rematch, Canelo won a hard-fought twelve round majority decision to win the middleweight crown.

Back in November of 2019, Canelo moved up by two weight divisions to score a knockout of Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO title at light heavyweight. He vacated the belt in the aftermath.

The third bout would likely have to happen at the limit of 168-pounds.

Golovkin, 38-years-old, is not focused on Canelo and has no idea if the third meeting will ever happen.

"I don't think about this because I'm tired of thinking about it," Golovkin said to AFP. "It's been over two years that we've been throwing this around. It's not my fault that this fight has not taken place.

"Currently, it's too early to say, but there is a possibility this fight might never happen."

And while there appears to be a lot of money involved in taking part in exhibition fights against YouTube personalities like Logan Paul, Golovkin is not even thinking about that scenario. But, he's willing to listen if there is interest in such a fight.

"Right now I'm in my professional boxing career and I don't see the need for that myself. But in future if there is a demand and an interest, then why not?" Golovkin said.
