Now that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, the reigning WBC middleweight champion, is free to make a voluntary defense of his title before entering into negotiations for a mandatory bout against Gennady Golovkin - the focus is on making his next fight and it's clear that Golden Boy Promotions and 'Canelo' want to plant their flag on Cinco De Mayo weekend(May 7th).

"That's the date we're targeting, we dont have a site yet," said Eric Gomez, the VP for Golden Boy Promotions, to BoxingScene.com.

"We're looking at a couple of possibilities but we're going to sit down like we always do with 'Canelo' and his entire team and discuss opponents, venue and all that stuff after the holidays. Obviously there's a lot of options right now so it's just a matter of getting our heads together and coming to an agreement with what we're going to do."

It is expected that Golovkin will fight some time in February or March. Some are disappointed that this fight isn't happening immediately in the wake of Alvarez winning this title on November 21st against Miguel Cotto.

Gomez explained - "The big fights, they take time to make them. Look at Pacquiao-Mayweather, how long did that take? It took six years or so to get that done. I think it's a mega-fight. It's going to happen and it just comes down to the negotiations. It's a very complex negotation."

When asked if he was optimistic that Alvarez-Golovkin would come to fruition in the fall of 2016, Gomez stated:

"If the terms are correct, we want to fight him next. If we can sit down and get the terms where everybody is happy then we want to fight him next. There's a lot of things that come into play - many, many things that come into play."
