Stalin knew he would face Germany eventually. He needed to buy time because the Soviet army was in total disarray and he couldn’t face Hitler’s army in the state it was in.

So you think Stalin was playing Hitler and not the other way round? OK!

I don't usually think of Stalin as being that wily just a peasant grown to gangster (I don't think of him as much of a communist for that matter); but that he had a long term plan is certainly possible.

Molotov certainly was a politician and wanted to be/saw himself as Russia's Bismark.

They both played each other and both had reasons to not attack immediately. I just don't think Stalin thought they would split Poland in two and never go to war with each other.
