  • Pole dancing may soon be an Olympic sport

Poker, foosball and pole dancing. What do these things have in common?

Well, besides being reasonable activities for a night out in Atlantic City, officials who help prepare specific sports for Olympic recognition apparently think they could soon take their place alongside running, gymnastics and ski jumping in the world’s most prestigious athletic competition.

    Seriously.

The Switzerland-based Global Association of International Sports Federations earlier month granted observer status to the International Federation of (Match) Poker, the International Pole Sports Federation and International Table Soccer Federation along with the organizing bodies for four other nontraditional sports – the first step toward joining the Olympic program.

“We warmly welcome our first Observers,” Patrick Baumann, the president of GAISF, said in a statement. “This is an exciting time for them and for us and we will do everything within our remit to help them realize their full potential as International Federations within the global sport’s family and, one day, maybe become part of the Olympic program.”

Pole dancing isn't any more or less ridiculous to me than plenty other gymnastic competitions

Foosball is extremely competitive and interesting, though probably out of place at the Olympics

Poker doesn't make sense for the Olympics either

Good luck getting the best pole dancers to compete without handfuls of cash being tossed at them. Doubtful any of them will be able to pass a drug test either.

Pole dancing actually requires athleticism, poker and foosball don't. Pole dancing actually takes a lot of skill and practice.

I've known girls who are serious and competitive about it and there are national competitions for it, but because of the association with strip clubs it will never be taken seriously in the mainstream, unfortunately.

Jiu jitsu, amateur kickboxing, and arm wrestling should be Olympic sports though.

Nice. Hopefully this leads to ping-pong ball shot putting from p#ssies. I think that's the ultimate goal and where the money is.

Poker doesn't make any sense, but could see the others there as they involve some level of active movements that test skill, endurance and strength. I think the inclusion of pole dancing is an attempt by feminists to try and legitimize stripping, because they know it is mostly done by women and not very respected.
