Let's differentiate the two. The firefighters action was to Bring fruit to work. His reasoning was to share food. Colins action was to refuse to stand for the anthem. His reasoning was to protest injustice.

Are we talking about actions or reasons? If actions, then please say refusing to stand for anthem, rather than protesting injustice. If reasons, then say the firefighter was fired for sharing food
The association of African Americans and watermelon goes back to the time of slavery in the United States. Defenders of slavery used the fruit to paint African Americans as a simple-minded people who were happy when provided watermelon and a little rest.

The link between African Americans and watermelons may have been promoted in part by African American minstrels who sang popular songs such as "The Watermelon Song" and "Oh, Dat Watermelon" in their shows, and which were set down in print in the 1870s. The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago planned to include a "Colored People's Day" featuring African American entertainers and free watermelons for the African American visitors whom the exposition's organizers hoped to attract. It was a flop, as the city's African American community boycotted the exposition, along with many of the performers booked to attend on Colored People's Day.[8]

At the end of the 19th century, there was a brief genre of "watermelon pictures" – cinematic caricatures of African American life showing such supposedly typical pursuits as eating watermelons, cakewalking and stealing chickens, with titles such as The Watermelon Contest (1896), Dancing Darkies (1896), Watermelon Feast (1896), and Who Said Watermelon? (1900, 1902).[10] The African American characters in such features were initially played by black performers, but from about 1903 onwards, they were replaced by white actors performing in blackface.[10]

Several of the films depicted African Americans as having a virtually uncontrollable appetite for watermelons; for instance, The Watermelon Contest and Watermelon Feast include scenes of black men consuming the fruits at such a speed that they spew out mush and seeds. The author Novotny Lawrence suggests that such scenes had a subtext of representing black male sexuality, in which black men "love and desire the fruit in the same manner that they love sex . . . In short, black males have a watermelon 'appetite' and are always trying to see 'who can eat the most' with the strength of this 'appetite' depicted by black males uncontrollably devouring watermelon."[11]

This stereotype goes back to slavery and beyond. He knew exactly what he was doing. If he didn't know what he was doing (which I doubt) he should've educated himself before he decided to work in a black city and get paid by black taxpayers.

Now you're educated and you know why it's offensive. Are you gonna keep defending this racist negative stereotype?

Ok, so now we're talking about perceptions rather than intent. The firefighter intent was to share food. The perception was that this was offensive, hence he should be fired.

The football players intent was to protest police violence. The perception was that this was unpatriotic and offensive.

Just like the firefighter was fired for being perceived as offensive, the football player should be fired for being perceived as offensive.

      Just like you said

We're talking about a racist offensive stereotype that has been established for hundred of years. That boy needed to be taught a lesson and he was taught one. I guess he thought this was Taylor where he could get away with that type of racism

Just imagine what would have happened had he brought some fried chicken and RC Cola along too.

This sounds like one of those poorly put together skits they show around 12:40am on SNL. "The guy who doesn't know what things can be offensive to different races guy" skit.

There's no way he meant to offend anyone at the firehouse.

My dad was a fireman. Those people you work with are the ones who drag you out of a burning building if you need to be. They literally rely on each other for their lives. The last thing you'd want to do is intentionally antagonize or insult the guys who may well have your life in their hands one day.

Cobra just sees racism in everything.

But Michelle Obama said not to trust anything dominated by one sex and ethnicity

And if watermelon is what black guys like a lot then why was it so bad for him to bring it in? I mean if he would have brought them all a CD of country music instead of rap, they might have been offended for him being insensitive to the likes of black culture. If he had brought in pheasant under glass somebody might of been offended because they thought he was to whitey for not bringing in fried chicken.

Not saying I would have done any of the above but just saying
