Maybe because I like Marvel better but the Avengers was better for me.

      It was decent at best.

Just finished watching The Dark Knight Rises. It was a good movie but not a great one. I watched it all the way through so that makes it better than Avengers by default.

I can't see what all the hype was about.

This is part of the problem. "You guys are SHEEP, you just don't GET the Dark Knight Returns". Dude, it's a film about a billionaire fighting crime in a bat suit. Betty Blue 37.2 le matin it ain't.

You see Batman is a popcorn movie seasoned with enough pretense to make people feel smart just for liking it. There is nothing difficult or challenging about it, but it pretends to have more depth than it really does.

if thats the case, it becomes an unfair comparisson...
Not at all. I went to see the Dark Knight with high expectations brought on by the stellar reviews and I was let down. The plot had delusions of grandeur that it didn't live up to and it was full of holes. Partly it's down to this:

All films require a suspension of disbelief to some degree or another. I mean the Avengers requires you to accept that a Norse God, a billionaire in a robot suit, a World War II enhanced soldier with wings on his ears and a mild mannered scientist who turns green and smashes stuff up when he gets angry are teaming up to save the world from thousands of Green Goblin clones from another dimension.

What Nolan's Batman films attempt to do is challenge you not to suspend disbelief. They insist that their content could be real. They insist that this is hard science fiction, not comic book action.

In short TDKR raises the bar on the realism and then jumbles together a plot full of holes and nonsense. The Avengers could have plot holes but you don't care and might not even notice. It's larger than life. Batman though insists that it is worthy and serious and cinema, so when lazy plot holes emerge they stick out.

Avengers is the second most overrated film I have ever seen. It's a trashy film, nothing more. Reasonably enjoyable, but nothing compared to TDKR.

What film did I enjoy more? TDKR of course.

I almost fell asleep during the Avenger's and thought that it was pretty dull.

While I don't think TDKR is a cinematic masterpiece, it has a certain thematic depth and makes us think more than typical superhero fare.

It doesn\t "make you think". It's popcorn politics.

No. It's all subjective. In comparison to Avengers it did for me.
