it sets up other punches and its the only punch that doesen't jeopardize your defense too much

I think its what ever punch you happen to be working on. Like tonight I was trying to work on landing an upper cut as a guy is stepping in or throwing a left hook to the body off a right hand. Granted many times you set up punches with a jab. But if you already have a good jab learn how to do other things so your not limited to a straight punching fighter.
