For awhile they were alternately calling me "Crash" and "Dozer" at my gym.

I'm actually ambidextrous; I fight southpaw b/c I'm left eye dominant.

I'm hoping to learn how to box -- really box -- this year.
yeah understand completely, You know what if feels like now, maybe over that hump? Did you fence with your left? The ability to use both hands effectively is always a plus. Tyson was a natural lefty converted to orthodox. Look how that served him. Some guys can pull of the switch more effective during a fight than others it can work to your advantage. Probably more so inside of a "boxer" or even "boxer puncher" fight strategy than the all out brawler. Seems like some good tools to have.

I did fence with my left. I do some things with my right, some with my left, and most simple tasks I can do with both. I've been practicing switching up and I have one trainer who thinks it's cool and one who hates it. I've covered this in other posts, sorry to say it again. Always open to suggestions.

I am not so sure that there is any particular length of time necessary before the first fight. Some kids come to the gym with lots of talent and lots of motivation. Sadly, they are in the minority! But 3 or 4 months is all they need. Then there is other kids who are a bit slower on the uptake and they need much more time. How much more? Quite honestly I'm not sure. However, if you don't let them fight they will lose interest in boxing. My rule of thumb was defense. They had to prove to me they weren't easy to hit otherwise I wouldn't let them spar, much less enter a competition.
