It only makes sense to run with your dog if you are training him for a match. Increases the bond between the master/owner. However, a human can't really run far enough or fast enough to train a dog for a match. One needs a dog treadmill as well as the roadwork. Dogs also recover quicker than people, so, in condition, can run long distances every day. Some people even run their dog out of a car, although that is a good way to possibly overwork the dog. Anyway the best thing is to always run the dog on dirt or grass, as the pads can wear off on concrete or asphalt. Also one has to watch what time of day they run the dog. Dogs don't sweat and can overheat more easily than people. To run in public areas, the dog has to be well-trained to run on the leash without suddenly stopping, bolting to the side, pissing and/or ****ting every 30 feet, or darting in front of cars. Most cities have leash laws anyway. And the dog should always be rubbed down, e.g. massaged, after the run.

if i had a dog that was very well trained and listened to my commands, then id run with one.

otherwise, its too dangerous to have one without a leash

I do, with a leash. I have control of my dog with it, safety for him (from cars) and for the others (people, dogs, cats, etc.)

I have a pair of hyper energetic Labrador Retriever and a Golden Retriever, both obedience-trained, and can run all day. They both just love to go out, run and swim. Increases the bond and trust between the Alpha (you!) and rest of the pack. Excellent jogging companions, and you get more chick attention cuz of them.

I had a basset hound lol. He was surpisingly fast but not for long distances, plus he had a bum knee.

Way back in the not so good old days I would run with my dog. He didn't seem to mind doing 10 or 15 miles a day, but then he is (or was) a dog. Humans, if they have any sense, don't do long-slow distance. It got me a ****ed up knee, which still hasn't fully healed despite all these years. The dog made it through unscathed.
