  • Closing fist on impact a myth?

I’ve seen lots of posts on this forum and Reddit as well about keeping a relaxed fist and tensing before impact. I disagree with this. I think you can keep a tight fist in guard, but still have a relaxed body and punch fast. Tightening your fist shouldn’t tense your whole body. This is just my opinion on it, what do you guys think? Here’s a video with tony Jeffries, who was a professional boxer, that better explains what I am saying.

Not a boxer but my impression is it tightens the muscles in your forearm taking away from flexibility. I mean to change the arc of the punch if the target moving. Plus it builds up tension for no good reason if your fists are clenched in a guard position.

That video has me second guessing what I believed. I believed that it was like catching a ball, part timing, part sight, part feel. If Tony Jefferies says it different, I believe him.

no, completely wrong... that is boxing 101

boxing is hard enough when your opponent is punching you in the face, no point doing it yourself

your back hand should be open to catch/parry/absorb, you close on delivery

Don't listen to Brit Olympians when it comes to boxing, listen to old school American pros.

"1. Shoot your loose, half-opened left hand straight along the power line at a chin-high spot on the bag.

              2. But, as the relaxed left hand speeds toward the bag, suddenly close the hand with a convulsive, grabbing snap. Close it with such a terrific grab that when the second knuckle of the upright fist smashes into the bag, the fist and the arm and the shoulder will be "frozen" steel-hard by the terrific grabbing tension.

That convulsive, freezing grab is the explosion."
