  • Mike Tyson Slipping Style

This youtuber is a guy who trained under Cus D’Amato.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMiA...ature=********

He goes over the technique Tyson used to slip punches.

Unlike most boxing coaches who advocate beginning the slipping motion with the legs D’Amato advocated beginning the motion at the waist.

Are there any other boxer’s who used this type of slipping mechanics who are good for a film study?

According to Teddy Atlas D’Amato learned the style from a 50’s boxer who was very elusive but had no power.

I think other fighters have tried, but not being able to be successful with it.

Intresing video there is a bit of
Him sparring in the beginning I had not seen a taller fighter use the style before.
But not sure if this would work for everyone

Agreed, most would have problems replicating IMO

Mike Tyson was also good at head positioning. I don't mean slipping. I mean that Tyson knew where to place his head without slipping. He often placed his head over the opponent's left or right shoulder. If your head is in the center, your brain needs some time to make the judgement to decide whether the punch is coming from left or right. If your head is over his shoulder, his punches can only come from one side, so it is easier to spot and defend. I've often seen Tyson leaning his forehead against opponent's shoulder. And his head doesn't stay in the same place. He shifts.

By the way, I also do weaving from the waist, not from the legs. I wasn't aware that Mike Tyson & D'Amato taught this way though. I just thought it was faster, more comfortable, more convenient. (I feel that I can swing waist faster & more powerful urgently when my legs are stable & fixed like a rigid platform instead of wobbling.) But I know how to do weaving starting from the legs, and that works too. I just prefer the other way.

Tyson's style looked good, but he didn't achieve anything at world level with it. Effective against lower guys, but not the likes of Holyfield, Douglas, Lewis, and Danny 'the Brixton bomber' Williams.

Keep that sig, or something similar, it pretty much sums you up in a nutshell. It's like, I'll read one of your posts and I'm thinking "what?". Then I see your sig and I remember, "Oh yeah, he's that guy".

The Cus D'Amato style made world champions out of Mike Tyson, Jose Torres, and Floyd Patterson.

                  Obviously it was effective enough.
