I joined the forum today and have a question for you.

I'm an ex army boxer and my son is 12 years old and he is two weeks out for his 5th fight. 3X1.30 minute rounds.
He is 4 wins no losses and would love to keep that going for as long as possibe.

He trains at his gym twice a week which gives him some technical ability but not too much cardio.
I train him at home a few days a week but my technical skill is limited so i focus on mainly building his stamina.
I don't want to push him too hard but i want him to be the fittest he can be because we all know fitness is huge in boxing.
My son is a pressure fighter so he really needs that stamina.

What do you guys recommend for stamina over the next two weeks?
How many rounds on the pads per session? times of rounds?
I normally do 6 rounds, 1.30 minutes and 40 seconds break.

Any other ideas to build good stamina two weeks out?

    Thanks guys, appreciate any comments.
Just ensure he has strong legs under him. At 12 the worse likely thing to happen is he gets the wind knocked out of him. 90sec rds are quick so most novices throw a lot of punches in that short time.

If you are looking to test your kids wind, throw him on a treadmill, have him sprint 3mins, 1min break to put his gloves on, then give him a good mitt session. Do each 3xs. The sprints need to be fast and when u do mitts focus on him keeping his non punching hand up.

If he can do that, u dont need to worry about stamina but of course dont forget it.

Like i said in the intial post, he does very little cardio at his gym. The coach expects all cardio to be done on their own time.

If i don't do it, he would have terrible stamina and fitness.

Bro... Run 3 miles in the morning.... That's all he needs...

Running doesn't get a fighter into shape. It gets his wind good so he can work hard in the gym to get in shape.

It's not his fitness i'm trying to improve. He's as fit as a butchers dog. It's his muscular stamina in his shoulders i'm trying to slightly improve before his fight and running does not help that.

Guys, if you have a comment, please read the whole thread.

That’s all gym work man. It doesn’t come from anywhere else than just training in the gym.

I honestly don’t know what shoulder stamina is? If his shoulders are getting tired it’s just because he’s never trained before. He’s new to boxing. Give it time.

Just make sure he’s running in the morning and let the coach take care of everything in the gym.

Nah! He's doing just fine by himself. Maybe get a second hand to help but at that age most are tought by their dads. And even in the pros their are still great dad and son combos.

              Loma, Mosely, Mayweathers...

I would work him on heavy bag, speed bag, then push ups back2back2back.

Like most said pretty close to fight so don't work to hard for now.

You'll have to adjust his time accordingly on the speed/heavy bags and when he can't do another pushup have him give two more. His arms going to be sore and hurt but eventually he will be able throw relentlessly

And throw in a lot of jump rope so he don't plod when tired in a real match.

If a father is training his son, he’s training him in the gym as a coach and also almost all the time training other fighters.

There is not enough time between now and the fight 'For his body to adapt' New training routines can shock the body and fatigue him at the wrong time 'So close to his fight'.

Training is a stimulus. Where as Getting stronger, faster and fitter are all physiological adaptations 'That happen during recovery'. When you train you are putting stress on your body 'Your body then adapts to those stressors by becoming stronger, faster or fitter'etc

A 2 week period is not enough time to see any big adaptions, plus it may even overload his stress adaption ability 'And over-train him, which will negativity effect his performance'.

Adapt his regime after his fight.
