A lot of injuries can be avoided by building up to things. For running, a good principle for beginners to stick to is to only increase your workload 10% per week (i.e. mileage, or time-on-your-feet), and some even say to only increase by 10% every other week. Your body WILL adapt to whatever you tell it to do, but there's something to be said for patience and persistence. Fitness isn't a goal, it's a journey (with goals along the way)
Well said, I could barely even "jog" at the beginning, now I can do more, still get winded at the end, but compared to when I first started boxing, I've come a far way with progress. Build up, but mostly listen to everyone else because I'm a beginner too lol.

But I get your struggle. I think you just have to trust and have faith in the process. Don't. Give. Up.

I've had a string of injuries from running from my ankle, to my thigh to my hamstring and they're all one after the other, I've only been running since Feb, so is running really worth it? What else can I do?

Another thing I've noticed is that it does next to nothing when it comes to getting me through either boxercize or training class (when we're focusing on fitness) I can do both of them of course but that's probably only because it takes a lot for me to quit something.

In my boxercize classes it's mainly over weight people that attend as the classes are open to the public and it's advertised as a 1k calorie burn workout so yeah it's main target audience is fat people. Although I am hitting the bag a lot faster and a lot harder and putting in a lot more effort then the fat people that attend I'm always worn out after it. Although they don't put as much effort in I couldn't see one of them being able to run for more than five minutes and that's me being generous to them.

All in all it makes me feel like boxing is a completely different sort of fitness you need then to be a runner? If this is true then why do boxers bother with running? Especially with all the injuries you can get?

I feel like giving up on my running because it isn't helping me at all. What could I replace it with? That's either cheap or free. (Swimming is too costly as it's a tenner each time if I'm to include bus fare)
Physically, LISS (low intensity steady state) cardio is overrated in my opinion. The calories burned are negligible compared to other things, the impact can take take their toll, its not very time efficient, and it doesn't simulate being the ring at all.

Mentally? That's a whole other story and THAT is where a boxer will get the benefits. It takes discipline to do it everyday. You have to push through exhaustion. You have to push through boredom and monotony. You have to do it rain or shine. It sucks.

Having said that, if you need a break now and then from a daily jog, try something like this (from Ross Enamait), all done as fast as possible with 60 sec rest

      Day 1
      4 x 800m
      4 x 50m

      Day 6
      6 x 400m
      5 x 50m

      Day 11
      8 x 200m
      5 x 50m

      Day 16
      10 x 100m
      5 x 50m

      Day 21
      10 x 50m

      Days 26/31/36/41
      Repeat above

      Day 46
      20 x 50m

Try to make it 4 days a week but usually gets 3 of 2 miles combined with rope jumping of 10 minutes and 15 minutes of the heavy bag.

I like the interval runs for boxing. 2 or 3 minutes running 75-80% effort followed by a 1 minute light jog (25-50%) in between. I repeat this 6-8 times. You may start out only doing 4 or 5 sets. This simulates the actual work load of a fight. I only do this once or twice a week. If every day, it would eventually cause an injury

If you are carrying 50kg of excess fat running to the end of the driveway will be hard.

Anyone who has a bf% of less than 15% can run 5 miles as if it was nothing.

Above 15% of bf it’s the hardest thing possible.

I’m currently 13% bf and jog 5 miles 4x a week just for laughs.

Previously I was 27% bf and couldn’t run more than 10 metres!
Today I learned that at exactly 15% body fat running goes from basically impossible to a breeze, sounds legit.

I was never a runner, hated it and could never really get a pace that I could keep. Then a couple years ago I started going for jogs every other day and finally for the first time in my life "got" it, actually started to enjoy it. BMI didn't change much, just got accustomed to it I guess.

I definitely think it is very different from the fitness required for sparring, which it much more HITT like, seems to provide a good base though, maybe it increases VO2 Max or something which translates.

But yeah, get a good runner to swing wildly while getting punched in the face and they'll be gassed in 60 seconds though, no doubt.
