Not nearly to the extent we see today. Fat heavyweights used to be the exception rather than the rule; it seems to me that the incidence of obesity we see in heavyweight boxers closely parallels the trend in society as a whole.

This trend is perversely fascinating to me given that in many other sports--tennis, basketball, golf, etc.--the athletes of today seem far fitter than those of yesteryear.
