    Anyone here do judo?

So I've been training boxing for ~6 years, had a bout, whatever else, 33 now, and thinking about trying out a grappling sport, specifically judo. I figure, if I'm gonna do it, I need to do it before I get too old(!), as it's q. athletic (part of being graded depends on points gained from competition)

Obviously I just need to give it a go, and see how I like it. But just interested if anyone has any insights on the transition from boxing to judo. Well, not so much a transition, as an incorporation... I would still go down the boxing gym every now and then

[The judo stance asks for dominant hand/foot forward, but I'd stick to my regular boxing stance (right-handed/orthodox) and learn judo this way round. I guess one disadvantage of keeping boxing and judo going at the same time, is I'll be too light on my feet for judo, and too planted for boxing?? I don't know, looking for advice from anybody who has successfully combined the two please.]

For street fighting or MMA or just fun?

I was only ever beginner level at boxing and judo (and street fighting) but for sure it's worth doing, you have to get used to it, getting thrown around, how to land the right way, but the techniques are good, realistic for real situations and as with boxing with practice you feel your timing and co-ordination become more natural.

Certainly not for street fighting or MMA, but looking to take it fairly seriously, get comfortable with grappling/throwing, etc. As for it being good in "real-life", that is attractive, but not my motivation. One thing I notice about streetfights, however, is that they tend to descend into ground-fighting or wrestling q. quickly..

I suppose it's one of those things really, isn't it, where you just gotta try it and see how it turns out

Did judo a few years ago, very flawed martial art, entire premise is the other party not striking?!?

Did Judo as a kid then flirted with Taekwondo and Boxing in my late teens but never kept 'em up, back to grappling now with BJJ so I can't really help you with the transition thing. I do want to give boxing another try but now I ain't got enough time to divide it between the sports and given my age BJJ seems like the smarter choice as well as having a Gracie Gym just on my damn doorstep.

Where bouts in Manc are you? Rob does 10 day free tasters in Marple and we got guys coming from Old Trafford - hell, even one dude from near Crewe. Maybe give it a try, see what you think?

EDIT: Oh, yeah... forgot we got one dude trains boxing at the Moss Side club on the Parkway. Maybe have a word with him.

Judo seems like a great choice for standup grappling. I know it also has some groundwork too...and if you ever go on to do BJJ those arts combine very well together.

The only thing I dislike about it is that the techniques rely on grabbing the gi cloth too much.
