You can also slip a jab to the outside and shoot a straight left to the head or to the stomach.

Or slip a jab to the inside and shoot a right hand to the stomach.

That's a pretty neat video, crazy how these old school traditional methods are still the way today.

Here's a good video for anybody interested.

I liked the vintage video, cool.
I think it's safest to counter lefts with your lefts esp. for novices like myself, be it a left hook, jab or upper. Bcz anytime you throw your right, you are exposed to get hit with the opponent's right. Just like Rocky Marciano says when commenting on Sugar Ray's fight, never lead with your right.

Floyd did the pull counter 100 times on Maidana, it worked as Maidana kept throwing single jabs. And we've seen how heavy Floyd got hit doing the pull counter: Floyd thought Maidana wasn't going to follow the jab with a straight right, but he did. Bcz a 1-2 is much faster than performing a pull back-2 combo.
I try to counter everything with my jab and low jab, also throw a lead hook here and there.

Countering only with lefts probably is safer for beginners. As is slipping only to the outside.

But as you advance it's good to have some variety in your skill set. If you respond with the same movements over and over you become predictable and a good opponent will time you.

My trainer was telling me about countering the jab by slipping outside of it, and with your oppenents arm still extended, landing a righthanded body shot to their exposed ribs? What do yall think of this? After slipping the jab, should I step my right foot forward to get closer and land the body shot, or do I need to always keep my lead foot in front? What are some other good counters that don't require advanced slipping ability and hand speed? I'm kind of new to this. I'll appreciate any input.
Learn more than one form of defense against particular punches because doimg the same thing over and over with get you set up for something nasty. I will say to learn one thing at a time though because its easier to process. Also learn why you are making each move that you are making because you can be set up in later rounds. Remember its chess not checkers. Unless you have Julian Jackson type power and even then you still must learn to play the chess game because you will get flatlined just like Julian Jackson at times lol.
