I was just wondering what the most effective counters are for the jab and 1-2. My trainer was telling me about countering the jab by slipping outside of it, and with your oppenents arm still extended, landing a righthanded body shot to their exposed ribs? What do yall think of this? After slipping the jab, should I step my right foot forward to get closer and land the body shot, or do I need to always keep my lead foot in front? What are some other good counters that don't require advanced slipping ability and hand speed? I'm kind of new to this. I'll appreciate any input.

I'm not sure I'd recommend stepping in with the right foot, until you have a lot of experience. Changing your stance can get you out of position

While your sparring partner is throwing a jab, step outside of it with your right leg (while simultaneousely moving your head lateraly outside of his jab), the exact moment you land on your right foot (and by doing it it means you transfered your weight to your right foot) throw your right cross over his jab.
It's very easy to learn, first start drilling it slowely than step up the speed of the exercice.
It's the exactly same thing Duran loved to do, and Floyd to some degree, but Floyd would more often use his reflexes and the upperbody movement to evade the jab instead of steppkng to his right.

And for 1-2, it depends on your timing or reflexes, but you can split it for example.
Let's say both of you and your opponent are in the ortodox stance.
If you are confident enough in your own reaction time, or your handspeed over your opponent's, you can parry his jab with your right glove and than THE EXACT MOMENT you feel his jab touching your right glove, you snap your straight right while in the same time moving your head lateraly to your left outside of the opponents right cross.Last edited by StefanTosic; 02-01-2018, 06:06 PM.

Probably the most basic counter for the jab is parrying it and shooting your jab immediately (assuming both are orthodox/orthodox or southpaw/southpaw). Try it with your coach or a partner.

You can also slip a jab to the outside and shoot a straight left to the head or to the stomach.
Or slip a jab to the inside and shoot a right hand to the stomach.
Mike Gibbons shows some good jab counters in this section of video:
