I have broken in the padding of my gloves only after 4 times training boxing, everytime I punch now I feel my knuckles pierce through the leather. Is it time to change the gloves up?

16 should be enough to protect. If they're faulty, you will see lumps from the foam breaking up under the leather.
If it's still smooth, they're probably fine. Just make sure you're using proper form and add some knuckle guards if needed (Winning makes great ones).

I assume you're using wraps and wrapping properly. If not, that's the first thing you must do.

so just because I feel my knuckles through my boxing gloves doesn't mean they are broken?

There could be a number of reasons, but it's highly unlikely that your 16oz gloves are broken after 4 uses. Most people get more like 4 years out of really good gloves. Maybe 1 or 2 from cheaper ones (sometimes more).

Some manufactures occassionally have a defect gloves that make it into the market. I
f your not comfortable with the performance of padding that you're getting out of the gloves contact the manufacture. Explain to them whats happened to your gloves and most likely they'll ship you a replacement.
I believe this is their contact page: http://www.fighters-inc.com/contact
