    Supplement question

Sometimes before I spar, I'll get slightly nervous or my muscles will get tight and as a result, I'll tire quicker.

I've read that the supplement valerian root has anti anxiety or relaxing properties. Any of you guys recommend it before sparring or competition?

Are you sure you want to take a sedative before sparring or fighting? You'd have to try it during waking hours, preferably when not sparring at first, to see its effects on you. Do a little research, if you haven't already.

It could have a sedative effect in larger quan******. I think the average sized dosage is 450 mg.

It's mostly used for anxiety problems. it's used for muscle relaxation more than anything. It has very few side effects. The effects of the supplement become stronger with continual use.

I think it could be beneficial.

Ah, but it could also increase anxiety. Give it a try, to see how your body reacts to it.

          Absolutly not ...lol

Valerian will zone you out and make you feel like a log its only use is for difficulties sleeping ....took it for awhile and definatly would not take it when you need to be alert.

But sometimes when you're anxious or worried, you need something to calm you down. You can defiantly be too alert.

I took it today when I went to the gym. I felt a little better than I normally do. It's almost like a mood enhancer. I felt more at ease and my muscles felt a lot looser and I felt like I was able to do more.

Now, this is all just my perception. In reality, it might not be doing anything for me. There's really no scientific way for me to know if I'm getting any real significant benefit from it. But based off of my feelings from that trial, it felt pretty good and I'll continue to experiment with this.

What you need to address is the source of the problem, not the symptom. The source is your nervousness. Address that, not the byproduct.

I used to take it to sleep but then I found out it's bad for your liver and stopped. I definitely wouldn't take it before sparring...and just so you know...everybody gets nervous. Try using breathing techniques to calm yourself down.

Not really that comes with experience, not medication in addressing nervousness. I had very high blood pressure in my first tourney ina toughman contest that they were considering not letting me fight but it was from just having high adrenaline something ive always had,it only took a few fights in to relax, these are 5 fights in one night at times I did. Being in a gym and a real competiton is night and day. Valerian definatly works I wouldn't recommend it in a real fight but try it and see.
