Power walking - has anybody tried it?

Power walking or walking in general is a lot easier on the joints, than say jogging or running. Whether one is more beneficial than the other, depends on your situation.
Think of it this way, most people, sit in a desk, couch, or chair all day long. They decide to get in shape so they start running, yet they don't know how to run/jog properly. Their body's all out of whack and soon enough they wind up blowing out their knee, ankle, back etc.
It's easier to start walking because, although your body may be out of whack the amount of short term/long term damage will not happen right away, you can correct your walking posture much easier and quicker than your running posture.
And to answer your original question I try to get 15-30+ minutes of walking in a day in addition to my training. And most of the time I'm pushing a double stroller with my 2 kiddo's in it, averaging 12-13 minute miles.Comment

Its easier on the joints, i think bernard hopkins power walks. They both great for your health. If you power walk do it on a treadmill on an incline with long strides for like 45 minutes to an hour each day everyday but rest on sunday. You will burn fat, and your health will improve.
I dont do much jogging anymore since my knees were hurting from too much running, so im doing more powerwalking on the treadmill it gets a good sweat going but cardio is boring on the treadmill, its easier and more motivating to jog outdoors because it gives you scenery and an actual destination to go to, treadmill is all mental.
Is it really necessary to rest on Sunday's if you're just power walking everyday though? If your body feels good and your not sore or anything I would think it's alright to do it 7 days a week.Comment

Slightly related... I just did a pretty long walk over the course of July - 30 nights, carrying 20kg (give or take) in a rucksack, averaging 15-20miles a day. My cardio has gone through the roof!! And leg strength feels phenomenal. I'm thinking about incorporating a weekly weighted walk into my training routine because of it. However, must say that upper body strength has declined somewhat after 30 days of neglect. But yeah, for core strength- weighted walks are awesome I reckon
I'd place you in the 'advanced walker' category, haha. Amazing stuff.Comment

Well they say this is the correct way to power walk but I always thought it looked funny. It might be the best way to do it but I'm just going to walk normally at a faster pace. 3.5 - 4 mph.

IDK about that man, if your cousin is really overweight any type of exercise is going to help him lose weight and with that comes a better feeling of self esteem. BUT there will come a point where he will plateau and he will need to do things more strenuous to get get his heart rate higher than merely power walking can do. Right now because he is overweight any type of physical activity raises his heart rate but as his heart (like any other muscle) gets stronger itll need more of a push. Personally I think swimming is the single best exercise. & I think a combo of swimming and jogging (outside) will get anyone into great physical and mental shape. One thing about swimming is no matter how far you can run or how fast, swimming will really put you in check into how strong your heart is and how deep your lungs are. A good swimmer will always have an easier time transitioning to running and not vice versa.Comment

Its always good to REST, always have rest days, your body needs to recover and nourish itself with healing nutrients from foods, replenish on rest days, I usually just take Saturday and Sunday off, but I powerwalk on a 7.5 incline at 3.4 speed for 40 minutes daily on my treadmill.Comment
