Right now because he is overweight any type of physical activity raises his heart rate but as his heart (like any other muscle) gets stronger itll need more of a push. Personally I think swimming is the single best exercise. & I think a combo of swimming and jogging (outside) will get anyone into great physical and mental shape. One thing about swimming is no matter how far you can run or how fast, swimming will really put you in check into how strong your heart is and how deep your lungs are. A good swimmer will always have an easier time transitioning to running and not vice versa.

Well he's 5'8 or 5'9 and about 220 pounds. He says he can't jog whatsoever because of really painful shin splints but power walking isn't too painful for him. I'm glad you brought up swimming, I'm going to advise him to do some of that too.

Aye thanks for the advice. I kicked back, relaxed and watched the Olympics all day yesterday and I felt beastly at the gym today. That day off did plenty good.

Bty, I tried that 7.5 incline at 3.4 speed for a couple minutes today and I gotta say that is some hardcore stuff. I'll stick to my Jogging/power walking routine, lol.
