I would say that with headgear, peripheral vision is diminished some so it would be hard to see hooks coming. But since you're a counter puncher it could work for you.
once you gets hundreds and hundreds of rounds in, if not thousands, you'll begin to see the punches by their body movements. Hips, feet, waist, learned rythme of the fight. Eventually you'll be blocking and slipping shots that you never even actually see. As in you don't see the glove at all but you just knew it was coming and 'got out da way'.......... Rockin'

Ahhhhh...I've never personally worn headgear or competed in the amateurs but I plan to at the beginning of next year. I read on an article about headgear in amateur boxing which said that it effects peripheral vision. But what you said makes total sense.
