  • What's your resting heart rate?

Apparently your resting heart rate is a good indication of how fit you are so i checked mine this morning and it was 38 beats per minute which i think is reasonably good. The lowest on record is Miguel Indurain the cyclist, whose resting heart rate was 28 bpm.

    What's yours?

Resting heart rate averages 60 to 80 beats per minute. In middle-aged, unconditioned, sedentary individuals the resting rate can exceed 100 beats per minute. In highly conditioned endurance-trained athletes, such as Olympic cross-country skiers, resting rates in the range of 28 to 40 beats per minute have been reported. Your resting heart rate typically de-creases with age. It is also affected by environmental factors; for example, it increases with extremes in temperature and altitude.

Even at my fittest in my mid twenties my resting heartbeat never dropped below 50, does that mean I was not as fit as I could have been, unlikely those days I was soldier in a select arm of the British forces which required me to pass a stringent selection programme so if I could have been fitter it may have killed me!

I think genetics play a part but I have never come across anyone with a resting heartrate below 50.

The average for a sedentary man may be something like that but someone who trains regularly will have a much lower resting heart rate and will most likely be under 50 beats per minute. You need to check it when you're lying down doing absolutely **** all. Best time is first thing in the morning when you've just woke up.

I have on a few occassions. Trained athletes generally have much lower resting heartrates and I've met and read about quite a few amatuer athletes who have low resting heart rates.

I'm not saying you haven't, all I'm saying is I have never come across anyone below 50!
I have read about some athletes who have incredibly low resting heart rates say 35 bpms or slightly lower but it is extremly rare to be below 40 bpm.

My experience is based on highly fit and trained soldiers who regularly (daily) 'tab' force march and run around mountain ranges carrying excessive weight and boxers (having trained hundreds!)
I have never been around proffesional athletes (apart from the odd pro boxer) although I have read that Seb Coe(one of the worlds greatest ever middle distance runners)had a rest rate of 39 bpms but as I said its quite rare!

No, a low heart rate is 15 which is accomplished by the practice of yoga.
