The studies behind the Olympics decision to throw out headgear showed it wasn't helping head trauma. Half inch of foam apparently won't stop your brain from playing ping pong in your skull when you get hit.

What headgear will prevent is getting your eyebrow slashed open when some new guy rushes in with his head, or getting your eardrum popped from a hook. If you don't like four weeks of dull pain and constant ringing in one year, wear headgear.

The padding differences between amateur gear and a pros headgear for spar work is night & day! The gear is for protection while your at work, simple as that and everyone "learns" how to work with it on. You train your eyes to focus in an era and when the opponents hands leave your sight zone your aware of that!

I remember two guys were in my gym sparring one dude walked into a grazing hook which opened a massive cut above his eye. Never seen him again after that

              Precisely.

Off topic, but I find it highly annoying when people find out I box, but when they see/hear about the head gear part, most think it is a football helmet lol.

You always have that kid that doesn't show up after his first beating.

I've actually seen that. What made it worse was at my old gym, the kid brought his girlfriend in on sparring day when he got his ass whooped.

lol damn. That's a big no-no unless you're a regular there and know the environment.
