  • Are Boxing Shorts Necessary?

I have a lower back problem ever since my teen days. i think it's something that occurs within my mother's side of the family. there would be times when the pain and discomfort is there. it's been quite a while since i had it again and now it's back.

so since i have shifted from lifting weights a year ago to just boxing this year the problem occurred again. now there is this guy from the gym who told me that since i box all the time and he knows about my problem he told me to buy a boxing shorts instead of just wearing my regular nike shorts. he said that boxing shorts has an extra garter to stabilize your lower back AND it also catches the sweat that runs towards your lower back.

there is a saying here that you should never let your sweat get cold/dry on your back because it gives toxins to your body especially when it drips towards your lower back.

now does this really help a little bit because i have been having problem moving when i box especially during sparring. it's very hard for me to bob and weave and slip from punches because of the discomfort that i am getting.

    please let me know thanks!

Boxing trunks have a thick band around the waste area that fits pretty snug around the waist and lower back. This certainly helps with stabilizing the lower back. If you wear the trunks higher, it can also help you take body shots a little better...so your trainer is right...

But you can also just wear regular shorts with a stabilizer/back brace geared towards exercising...(what I would do. I wouldn't want to wear boxing trunks just to train).

thank you for the reply bro. where can i buy that back brace for boxing? what is it specifically called at the store?

you're right i don't want to wear boxing trunks just to train since im not a pro anyway or i don't want to go over the top with what i am wearing over there. i don't want the real fighters at the gym to think that i feel like i am really a boxer.

Something like this would probably work well

LOL @ "I don't want the real fighters at the gym to think that I feel like I am really a boxer". That's funny, but a common sentiment I think. Boxing gym culture is interesting. Anyways, wearing boxing shorts to train isn't even what "real fighters" do...it would just kind of make you look like a clown probably. But if you're sparring, you should look the part (boxing shoes, decent gloves etc.)

          thanks again for the info.

well it's quite different here than the US. fighters here are poor and they would only wear Nike's or branded shorts for special occasions. they stick to just wearing the boxing shorts they wear when they fight or when they train over and over. so it's only the fighters who wear those boxing outfits at the gym and regular people like us who can afford branded shorts wears just the branded outfit. so if i wear boxing shorts you're right i would look like a clown or someone who thinks of himself as one of the fighters hahahaha.

As far as shorts go, I promise it won't have any kind of significant effect on your lower back pain.

Your best bet with sparring is a nice foul protector that can ride high or low enough. If anything, that will give some kind of stabilization.

try to stretch it more if it is possible in your current condition
