Once you understand the basics...nothing is more effective at teaching you how to fight than PURPOSEFUL sparring. Meaning, sparring to work on specific things to get better.

To me it seems that what you're tainer is trying to say is that pugilistic qualities and the sweet science will win you the fight rather than being a top athlete, think Niccolino Locche or James Toney, but I dunno man, you've still gotta have the gas. Look at what happened to Toney recently in that prizefighter comp. at York Hall.

I wish more coaches emphasized footwork.

Footwork allows you to control angles, geometry and distance.

You control these and you'll be in better position to not get hit, better position to counter, better position to lead.

If you control the distance and the angle, you control the fight.

Hey guys, first off, this is my first post so whats up everyone!

Anyway, im not sure exactly what your coach was trying to say but in terms of how you worded it, its a bit confusing.

Putting in work on your bags not only helps you practice technique and timing but it also helps your conditioning. Your gonna need to put in that work if you want to be a successful fighter.

Footwork, head movement and timing are also important but alone will not win you fights. And you practice all these things on your bags and when sparring.

Basically, what your coach said (as far as the way you worded it), doesnt make sense. How else are you going to work on your footwork, head movement and timing other than drills, bags and sparring. Thats where you put things together.

He scolded you for wanting to go hard everyday and he is right about that so maybe I am just misunderstanding what his point is. You wont last much longer than a few weeks hard sparring everyday without getting injured.

Even light sparring everyday can cause small over training injuries.

Give your coach some more time and give us updates. As of right now I am thinking we are misunderstanding his point. It sounds like he knows what he is talking about enough to say something as strange as what you said in your original post.

They both work together to make a fighter. You could have the best foot and head movement in the history of the game but once/if you get tired than you ain't got ****...............Rockin'
