There's something very fishy about all this!

A seven x 3 min round amateur fight?!!

200 punches thrown a round! (That's over 1 punch every second of active ring time).

But I will say one thing.......in that brief 17 seconds the guy in blue looked pretty good. If that is you, stick at it.....some nice combinations and good speed.

It was suppose to be 12 rounds but my sparring partner couldn't continue. This isn't a sanctioned amateur event just hard sparring we do every other Friday that's open to the public, mainly family and friends. Usually there aren't this many people that show up.

7 rounds for an amateur fight?

12 rounds of competitive boxing at anything other than snail pace is a different league. It is the pacing, the stop start action, the sudden quick offensive and defensive moves.....not to mention the absorbing of punishment that really pushes the athlete to a serious level of exhaustion.

And very quickly without good experience!

Let's not act like running 5 miles in 38 minutes is not pretty good. It is...but it alone won't enable you to go 12 rounds in boxing. It's probably a good indication that you got the wind to do it....but you also have to have the muscle endurance...especially in your shoulders.

So it's pretty much a "smoker" fight. Are there people scoring these organized sparring matches?

Some of the coaches and parents volunteer as supervisors but they don't judge the fights. I have guys in my corner keeping track for me.

It depends what you want to compare it to. This might be a good time for a heavyweight. But judging by the sparring video, we aren't dealing with heavyweights!

I was always told that running three miles in 18 mins was what our coach expected for three round amateurs. Pro rata, that is a 30 min 5 mile time.

Thomas Hearns in preparation for the Benitez fight was running 4 miles in 21 mins. Pro rata, that is a 26:15 5 mile time. I've just checked that in his biography.......it really is a different league! If you want the 12 round fitness of a pro; these are the running times you are after!

I could definitely run 5 miles in 30 minutes but I don't want my legs burnt out before I even get to the gym. The 5 miles in 38 minutes is a warm up followed by 8 x 200m repeats two to three times a week depending on muscle soreness. Then the fun begins at the gym with an hour of traditional boxing exercises and half and hour of sparring two to three times a week.
