To be fair, I am a local runner and compete locally........and I've got to be careful not to champion running as an exercise for boxers too much simply because its my passion and also because running competence in rank amateurs has very little bearing on 12 round stamina.

The most important exercises for a boxer are quite frankly sparring and actually fighting in competition. Everything else (the roadwork, skipping, shadow boxing, strengthening exercises, focus pads, speedball, heavy bag work, floor/abdominal work) simply build the athlete around the skillset.

There are other exercises that can rival running for a boxer such as swimming and cycling.......but they less clearly mimic movements in the ring. Skipping rope and shadow boxing are on the surface superior in that they more closely exercise 'ring' movements. The only problem is that it is much harder to get the heart rate up to a level that can contribute to increased fitness in these two exercises. Running would be my preferred endurance exercise over cycling and swimming.

But bringing things back to the thread starter....running 5 miles in 38 minutes is simply not that impressive. I know a 48 year old local woman who can run 6.25 miles in 37:09. But it doesn't mean that she'd be any more handy over 12 rounds than the thread starter even if she could box. James Toney probably couldn't run 5 miles in 40 mins, but he'll fight 12 rounders without too much difficulty.

Skillset, ring generalship, pacing and experience are key to surviving the 12 round distance. But I would say that if a 6-8 round professional was seeking advice on how competent their running should be before embarking on their first 12 round fight..........I'd suggest that a sub 28 min 5 mile time would be a much more confidence inspiring statistic!

if you can get up to 10 miles running at that same pace, and then add in somebody beating the **** out of you for the duration of your run than you will probably still not make 12 rounds.

if boxing was all about running we'd have kenya dominating the boxing landscape............ Rockin'

I'd doubt that running 10 miles in 1 hour 16 mins would indicate 12 round fitness either. A 40 year old female neighbour ran that distance in 69 mins last weekend.

12 rounds of competitive boxing at anything other than snail pace is a different league. It is the pacing, the stop start action, the sudden quick offensive and defensive moves.....not to mention the absorbing of punishment that really pushes the athlete to a serious level of exhaustion.

And very quickly without good experience!

Boxing its completely different once you are in the ring...

Try sparring first and you will get the idea. But bodypunches, nervousness, style of fighting and so many other factors can affect that its really hard to tell.

IMO i dont think any guy that doesnt have boxing experience could last "12 hard boxing rounds" most guys that can go hard for 12 rounds have a lot of experience.

Still the only way to really know its trying it!

I was able to go 7 hard rounds, threw an estimated 200 punches per round with no water breaks. Felt like I could have went an extra 2 rounds.
