I have never heard a fan of basketball say we hate the playoffs because the tempo slows down and more defense is played.

I can only hope that this sport I love gets the respect it deserves technically. If not I'm afraid we are the WWE.

I tell you what maybe he has not gained latin fans but he gained some fans/haters/attention because we are still talking about him and that fight along with many other websites and forums. My youtube pg alone has done at least 40,000 accumalated views of that fight. So somebody is watching whether they like or dislike the style
Well, I'm coming from a business point of view because I'm in the business of boxing. This isn't a slight on you and I know when I direct comments to you, it can offend you and that's not my intention. I don't train to have a successful gym or teach technique solely, I train fighters to fight. We have about 6 pro's in the gym currently and we fight to make money, that's just what it comes down to. They have to pay their bills and so does the gym and that's where the majority of our income comes from, not monthly fees.

So the examples you gave aren't really relevant because in MMA like boxing or the NBA, offense is what attracts fans. I'm not talking about the hardcore fans, they will always be there. I'm talking about the casual fans you want tuning in and spending that money.

During his fight with Donaire, the crowd was booing, now I appreciated every minute of it and I'm with you on Rigo's mastery of the sport and his particualr style but they do have to make him viable when it comes to selling PPV's because that's what it comes down to. Getting butts in the seats and selling tickets and PPV buys. Boxing IS a business at the end of the day.

You can't bring up the past because those were lower weight classes. Now Rigo is going to be at 126lbs and I don't see him getting a ton of KO's there. But it's not just about KO's it's about putting on a show. He doesn't have to be Brandon Rios but people aren't going to tune in to watch him fight the way he did vs Donaire on a consistent basis, not the casual fan at least.

We are hardcore fans, so we can't understand why people can't appreciate that but I'm giving a perspective outside of just us, you have to think like a promoter sometimes.

Yes ive seen Rigo do that many times. With that step he is doing 2 things:

      1) he is selling the step like you say. He is making his opponent commit to stepping in that direction.

      2) Then what he does is load up on that step. He bends his knee and creates spring. When he springs off he has an advantage over his opponent. He can push off and travel further in the opposite direction faster. Basic physics. He is using leverage in his knee joints/legs. His opponent has no spring in their leg to push off, they cannot travel as far as him and that is what always rigo to cover distance and make his escape.

Willie Pep would do this laterally. he would lean to one side and move and commit his opponent to go that way and then spring off and go the other direction making a quick escape.

Floyd Mayweather Jr does a very simmillar lateral movement to Rigo when ever he is on the ropes but doesnt use spring in his knees , instead he bounces off his toes quickly in the opposite direction. I believe the reason for this is that it causes his opponent to reset his position and that gives floyd the advantage to either move his opponent into a position that favours floyd or to make his opponent forget the punch he was just about to throw.

A young Macho Camacho would pull of a simmilar move to both Floyd and Riog and i believe he did it exceptionally well. He would use it when in corners. He would have his opponent commit to one direction and then circle out or pivot and regain ownership of the centre of the ring. And he did it at such venmous speed! He was super fast @ 130lbs

Ive learned a lot from u Coach Barry. Youre videos are great. Keep em comming champ

EDIT: It was mentioned in the thread that how do u counter Rigos move?

If you see him bend his leg, bend your leg and push off with him in the direction he goes so that u can remain right infront of him at all times.

If a fighter is aware of his foot work trick they can be ready for it when he is trying to escape whilst circling and be poised to catch him in a position he may not expect!!!!!!!!!!!!

      God bless everyone

Thanks for the well thought out and intelligent comment. A lot of people here PM to say what they want to say. I appreciate it. However post it here on the threads. Maybe more people will be encouraged to speak intelligently and not have to worry about the consequences. There is power and numbers as you can see.

Thanks again for your comment and the kind words.

          Barry
