whats the point of probing?

Whats the point of probing punches? ex most relevant would be to probe your jab, a continous amount of jabs not meant to hit but more range finder or to distract? A more advanced example would be rigodeauxs unorthodox rear cross probe which he does in almost all his fights especially him vs kennedy i can note maybe 4-5 times alone in that fight....but what are the reasoning behind this?

Used as a distraction/to see how he reacts/to make them open up so he can counter his attack.

Also if you throw 100% every punch your opponent expects the power if you tap tap find a gap and throw a power shot I think it can be more affective

Many many reasons. Range being one of the big ones. If you jab twice and your opponent is at the end of your jabbing range you now know as soon as takes one step forward the right hand can follow. Like what rigo did to donaire all night. And Rigo's probing left to me is more a set up. He throws what looks like a lazy cross to get the guy to over commit on a counter. Then he pulls back and hits em with the right hook
