What's the purpose of press-ups from a bodybuilding perspective?

      bodybuilding, huh?

      that's all about looking good
they do make you look goood, doc.

but on the real, i've always felt that they're a practical exercise if you're looking to condition your upper body and get stronger. they can be pretty dynamic, and they're easy. my chest can be in what i'd consider good shape / strong, but if i'm not doing pushups regularly and i crank out a few hundred over the weekend i'll feel sore over much of my upper body. that's a win in my book.

i also appreciate their versatility. you can do almost anything with a push up.

I've taken the term 'negative reps' a little too literally so I aim for around minus four a day.

I think they help with lifts personally, and I think they can help in terms of developing explosiveness if you're chest tapping, clapping etc, but aesthetically I don't see them as serving much of a purpose. Not directly at least.

genetics, hard work, diet, and chemicals in the proper proportions. in arnold's case it's mostly the genes. i don't care what kind of gear you're on, and how many pushups you're cranking out, if you aren't a robust man you aren't going to look like that.

he incorporated pushups into the routine that built the most impressive physique in the history of bodybuilding, at least in my opinion. they're obviously not responsible for building all of that muscle on their own.

is there some sort of internet agenda against he pushup? i learned about athletics and the weight room through participation, so you'll have to pardon me if i am missing something. i don't know what else you're trying to get out of this exchange.

I don't do them daily anymore, only at the end of a chest/tricep session and I don't do normal press ups I do them with three chairs so I can get more depth with a 20k weighted vest
