lifting light weights but more reps will make you more explosive and have more power. Plus when you're punching it's all about how you transfer your weight. Stepping with your jab and turning over your fist at the time of impact gives you way more power also. Just snappy quick punches.
Old school way, have someone hold the heavy bag and throw power shots as hard as you can for a 2-3 minute round. It will increase muscular endurance, but also train your body to throw with more regular force. Very important to exaggerate your punching mechanics, as in rotating your lead foot, rotating hips, maintaining balance for proper weight transfer.
Medicine ball wall throws
Get a 10-15 lb. medicine ball and throw it with alternating hands simulating throwing a punch. Do this against a wall for 30 reps each side, 3 sets. It will increase explosiveness and power.
Power resistance band punches
Get a high resistance band, hook one end to a fixed piece of furniture like a boxing ring, get in your stance, and do each arm, rotating and exploding your punches with as much power and speed as possible. Do each arm 30 reps, 3 sets.
Remember, boxing is not weightlifting class, we dont train to look like fitness models (although we reap the benefits of looking chiseled and muscular from intense training). We train to effectively enhance our balance, speed, power, stamina, endurance, and of course boxing intelligence.
i agree with learning to turn the punches over. will not work for everyone. for me i think if everyone fights in his. her proper weightcalss that is the key. you can't get in the best shape and the hydrate (bull****) you will lose all you trained for. notice how almpost all fights one guy is so much bigger than the other. get in shape at your weight and fight at that weight with no changes 1 day before the fight. train for 12 rounds and you will be stronger. it affects cuban, russian fighters. they are 3 round fighters and only have the strength to go 3-6 rounds with power. if you up the conditioning/strength to go 10-12 the power will increase. no my reply is not the right answer but from being in there i know i know a little sumpin sumpin. either you can punch or you can't. learn angles, where to hit a guy. be a student of the game and focus on an opponents weakness and have a plan b-c-d etc usually the punch that you don't see is the one that hurts. here is my ****** analagy. if you kick the wall with your toes it won't hurt but when you get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and stub your toe it hurts like a mofe. the one you do not see is the one that can get a gut out of there.
So whether you are a natural born puncher or not there are ways to increase your power.
Can you name the best ways you can think of for increasing POWER?
technique 100% this is the best way bar non. We see skinny dudes deliver crushing knockouts every weekend, why do people think explosive weight lifting is going to turn someone into a puncher?
explosive weight lifting turns an already good puncher with good technique into a slightly better puncher. that is all. JMM a perfect example.
the other benefit I personally believe is having heavy wrists and forearm bones and natural strength. natural strength seems to be more functional that built up strength. you can see it in guys like Foreman, Maidana and the late Valero. I've known some farm kids who sort of have the same deal going on.
Technique will trump any other method to increasing power. Technique really trumps anything in terms of improving something and is the first thing that should be reinforced before pursuing any other methods.
Exhausting other methods first is really dumb. That's like putting a turbo-kit on a car to improve your laptime, meanwhile you suck at driving. Become a better driver, then add the kit.
If you're power sucks, maybe you just suck at boxing.
So improve your technique first. Then move onto other things. Olympic Lifts, Heavy low Repetition compound lifts like Squats and Deadlifts can help.
